Garforth greats - 7 questions - Brett Renshaw

Garforth greats - 7 questions - Brett Renshaw

Jonathan McGourty24 Jan 2014 - 18:15

"The Boss" fills us in on his Garforth Town days

As one of Garforth Towns most successful captains, Brett Renshaw definitely earns his legend status at the club.

Without further ado, let's get Bretts' answers to our seven questions...

1) Where are you currently playing your football (or where did you last play?)

I am currently retired, I did play the beginning of this season at Hemsworth in the NCEL div 1, due to my dad being assistant. He asked me to help them out so I came out of retirement for a few games, (got a few goals). Previously I stopped playing in the 2011/12 season at Halifax due to a bad knee injury.

2) How would you describe yourself as a footballer?

I would say I was a player that gave everything for a team. There were players with more talent than me that didn't do it because they weren't prepared to give everything to win, I was! And picked up a few cuts, bruises and breaks on the way.

3) Which years were you at Garforth Town (roughly)?

I think I signed in the 2003/4 season, for Jimmy Martin, and stayed till the 2008/9 season, I maybe wrong. Loved every minute - two promotions and a cup win as captain.

4) Which was your best season here and why?

I am unsure which season it was but the first promotion season was brilliant!! We gave everything to go up and had so many things go against us. We had a brilliant squad which Simon had built in his first season. But for some reason (due to lots of injuries) I found myself playing up front second half of the season. I scored about 17 goals and played up front with Jason St juste and skinny legs Kelsey either side of me! Great team!

5) Looking back on your time at Garforth, can you pick out three memorable (good or bad) moments.

Wow, this ones a good one to ask me! So I'll pick 3 good ones because I had a lot.

Winning the county cup against a team I would go on to sign for the next season was good, (Bradford Park Avenue). I scored the winning pen! Loved that day and night with the fans!

When Socrates came. I've never known anything like it. On game day I was at the club getting interviewed at 10am when we didn't kick off till 3pm. I was also playing in the Careca game but it was nothing to the Socrates game! People came from all over the world to see him!! And I was his captain for the day!

And finally I would say meeting a lot good friends players, fans and staff over the years I was there. We had a lot of ups and downs but met some great people that I won't ever forget.

6) Which team mate stood out most in your time here, and for what reasons?

I loved Greg Kelly, it's hard there were a lot of great players over the years, Lee Sharpe was ok! But me and Greg became friends for years on. As a player (when he lost a bit of baby weight!) he was unstoppable! Fast skillful and loved putting a show on for the fans!! Really bad hair dos over the years too which was easy banter!

7) Do you have a message for Garforth supporters in their 50th year?

Yes, I will definitely get to see you all soon!! Miss the club and all the fans! Keep supporting and the good times will come again!

Thanks Brett for the kind words and the trip down memory lane. All the best from all at Garforth Town.
