Second placed Matlock overcame Garforth to end a two game losing streak.
A solitary second half goal was enough to win this fiercely fought NPL East match, as Matlock put their midweek mauling at Redcar behind them with a solid defensive display.
The visitors rattled the Garforth woodwork early in the first half, but chances were few and far between for either side.
The second half continued in a similar vein until it was punctuated by a fine finish from Theo Upton, calmly stroking the ball past Harry Flatters from inside the area.
A subdued Garforth finally threw the kitchen sink at the Gladiators in four minutes of stoppage time and it almost paid off.
Rinor Ejupi saw his close range effort brilliantly saved in the final play of the game.
