The first of two games for the Miners in this Easter weekend will be hosting North Ferriby at the Bannister Prentice Stadium, marking what will be the penultimate home game of a commendable first season back at this level. Two spot kicks separated the sides in a fairly even game back in November, with both penalties sadly falling to the visitors in a 2-0 defeat.
Town currently sit comfortably 9th in the NPL East table and likely will remain around the position, allowing Paul Marshall's team to freely impress in their remaining three games without the pressure of going up or down. However, Ferriby should come out all guns blazing with a play-off spot still at stake for them.
The Villagers mathematically can climb into the play-off spots by the end of the season, although a sizeable five-point gap between them and Emley AFC may be beyond the seventh-placed side's reach. One would think only three wins from three alongside other results swinging in their favour could give them a chance.
Their recent form of five points from their last six fixtures hasn't helped their promotion bid, as Ferriby boss Chris Bolder noted his squad were "devastated because we haven't picked up the required points." However, he highlighted that it has been another "good season" for the club and that they "will attack [the remaining games] with every endeavour we normally do."
Those comments came after the Villagers' 2-0 loss to Ossett United last Saturday: a disappointing result in front of a 603-strong home crowd. Comparatively to Town, injuries to key players late in the season have played a part in distancing themselves from a possible escape up and out of the division.
Additionally, Ferriby have lacked goalscoring threat at times in the latter stages of the season in a similar fashion to the Miners; possibly as both teams' leading strikers have departed for pastures new midseason. Josh Whiteley was up to 12 for the Villagers by the time of his departure to Australia in January, with two of them being against Garforth in November. Since, the visitors have shared the goals across the squad but by no means are a weak force upfront.
Heading back to the home camp, the Miners sealed all three points last Saturday in a 1-0 win against Ashington with a well-organised and determined display. Nevertheless, Town yet again had to do it with ten men after Harry Viggars was given his marching orders in the second half - a week after Sam Denton was shown red against Dunston.
Despite another suspension, assistant manager Mark Smitheringale praised the "great work ethic and solidness in defence" of the team to see out a professional win after a difficult run of fixtures. Garforth still have many injuries to deal with in addition to the two suspensions, yet recent showings have really shown the character of the Miners to pick up points in adversity.
All in all, both teams look set for a top ten finish in the final standings, but Friday offers Town an opportunity to close off an already impressive first campaign back at Step 4 football strongly.
