Against the odds, Garforth took the lead through a deflected Luke Kitson free kick, but the jubilation was short-lived when a looping header put the home side level.
Paul Hagreen was then sent off on the stroke of half time for a foul committed outside the box.
With an extra man, Sunderland dominated after the break and soon edged in front.
Garforth played the second half doggedly with their backs to the wall, but were eventually killed off in the final minutes.
