Garforth began the evening the better side with Joe Allerton firing over the bar after a well-worked move and then new signing Harris Eggleston forcing a save from the Mags keeper when picked out by captain Dan Coupland.
The home side almost took the lead against the run of play on 26 mins when their number 10 hit the crossbar with a long range effort. This spurred the York League Premier Division champions into action, with their number 7's header held by Town's triallist keeper shortly after.
The Miners were on top second half however, with Luke Aldrich looking certain to score after lifting the ball over the onrushing keeper on 52 mins. His effort was wide of the target, but after keeping the ball in play was denied by a recovering defender. A glancing header by the striker was just wide moments later before his determined run sadly couldn't be finished off, a low effort going just wide.
Sub Matthew Savage's strike was inches beyond the far post just after the hour mark, but finally Town made the breakthrough nine minutes from time. Stepping up for a free-kick just outside the box, Patrick's well struck effort had enough power to beat the keeper at his near post. A first goal for the midfielder which will hopefully prove a confidence booster after his early promise halfway through last season was set back by injury. He almost grabbed a second two minutes later when his effort fizzed wide after good work by subs George Harrison (also returning from injury) and Dexter Ball.
Paul Marshall's side play their final friendly game this Saturday, when 1874 Northwich are the visitors (kick-off 2pm).
