After a month away, football finally returns to the Bannister Prentice stadium on Saturday, as Garforth Town take on Penistone Church.
The Miners return to league action following their convincing 3-0 victory last Saturday away to Maltby Main. Nick Thompson opened the scoring, James Burgess added another to his tally to score for the 3rd game running, his 25th in the league, and Sam Barker rounded off a dominant first half showing.
Penistone Church come into the game having lost their previous 2 in the league. Last time out, the visitors were beaten 3-0 away from home to league leaders North Ferriby. The side currently sit a point ahead of Garforth at 4th place in the table, although the Miners have a game in hand on their opponents.
Paul Marshall’s side will be aiming to prevent their upcoming opponents from further solidifying their position by taking all 3 points for themselves. 6th place Hallam, only behind Garforth on goal difference, are also in the battle and the order of the teams could completely jumble following Saturday’s results.
The last time the sides met in November, the Miners were the runaway victors. Garforth were rampant at the Memorial Ground, securing a 4-0 away victory in South Yorkshire. Dan Coupland and Sam Barker were on target, with James Burgess grabbing himself a brace. Garforth’s talisman Burgess will be hoping to continue his excellent goalscoring form this weekend.
A good attendance can be expected for Saturday’s fixture as the football league is paused for international break, and Penistone travel up from Barnsley with one of the highest average attendances in the division.
