After Saturday's draw the two sides met again in this leafy corner of south Manchester, with a visit to Burscough or Droylsden (which also went to a replay) the reward.
Garforth were once again on top in the early stages with Max Tweddle going close twice. His volley was claimed by home keeper Felix Chester after Charlie Marshall's pass was deflected and then the fullback shot straight at Chester when played through by Matt Savage. There was one chance for West when Conal Gallagher's arrowed effort was headed over the bar.
Any worries of a repeat of Saturday when Town couldn't make their possession count were relieved however when Marshall popped up once again to give us the lead. Ghosting in behind the last man, he stroked home Harry Colville's delivery on 36 mins for his second of the season. Jack Johnson went close just before the break with an effort inches over the bar, then down the other end Gallagher fired wide at the near post after Billy Matthews burst into the penalty area.
The second half was more of an end-to-end affair with the hosts more of an attacking threat. Seconds after kick-off the lively Jacques Etia brought a fingertip save from Harry Flatters with a low drive, then Johnson could only shoot straight at Chester after the ball was played to him along the edge of the box.
Etia looked certain to score on 64 mins when getting clear after Jamie Barkway looked to have been fouled, but could only skew wide.
Five minutes after Colville's powerful free-kick was deflected wide by the 'West' wall. There was a great chance for sub Harris Eggleston when he got clear on the left, but was denied by the feet of Chester.
Sub Kiefer Cole came close to an equaliser with a 20-yard effort which Flatters saved at the second attempt.
Sub Mutty Al-Jahadhmy saw a deflected effort go wide of the far post after a jinking run inside before he was almost played in by a superb delivery by Eggleston, but was denied by last-ditch defending. Colville looked to have been fouled in the box as the 90-minute mark approached, but recovered and teed up sub Dexter Ball who's effort went beyond the far post. A decisive second sadly proved elusive for The Miners, but they put in a gritty defensive display to keep the hosts out and secure passage to the next round. The final chance fell to West sub Lewis Billingsley whose powerful strike was saved by Flatters.
With Droylsden 3-0 winners in their cup tie, we head back to Manchester on Saturday 22nd August for this Preliminary Round tie, only the third meeting between the two sides. Meanwhile, the league season begins in earnest this Saturday when me make the journey north to Dunston (kick-off 3pm).
