Garforth started well, with Charlie Marshall seeing a deflected strike go over the bar after good work on the left by Max Tweddle. The resulting corner kick was duly headed into the net but was ruled out for an infringement on York keeper George Sykes-Kenworthy. A Jordan Emery long throw pumped into the box on 15 mins almost caught out the City stopper who managed to claim at the second attempt.
What's understood to be an experimental Minstermen lineup, with talented former Town star Mo Fadera in their ranks, began to find their way through our defence, and Jamie Barkway made a crucial challenge to keep out Paddy McLaughlin at the expense of a corner. From then on it was they who looked more likely to finish the half ahead. Harry Flatters denied Cameron John at the near post after a clever one-two with Fadera, before Batty's low shot was straight at the Miners keeper after Fadera supplied him on the edge of the box. McLaughlin was denied again on 31 mins, this time by Flatters who brilliantly tipped his long range strike onto the roof of the net. Fadera then had a go himself after a foray in from the left, but his effort was just off-target.
Leone Gravata was the first to go close in the second half, forcing a good save from Flatters. By the hour mark, Garforth had made four changes, with Harry Viggars, new striker Nick Hepple and promosing triallists Joe Allerton and Donald Chimalilo brought on. The visitors meanwhile opted for wholesale changes, with a youth side taking the field. The new-look opponents were almost handed the lead a minute later when a Town defender's header under pressure from Adam Tweed looked to be heading into his own net but thankfully went just wide.
Despite this, The Miners pushed on and went on to become the better side. The source of the only goal of the game however was an unlikely one. Defender Owen Marshall went in for a challenge on a defender 30 yards from goal and the strength of it was such for the ball to sail over the stranded City keeper and into the net. Whether he meant it or not, it was a first ever club goal for a player who's solid displays towards the end of last season made him a key part of our starting eleven.
Chimalilo was inches away from making it 2-0 after picking a defender's pocket and driving forward, his low strike just wide of the far post. Fellow substitute Max Bauer came close a couple of times in the final minutes, shooting just beyond the far post when played in by Chimalilo, then after a determined run being denied in the six yard box by both defender and keeper.
After the 2-0 win in this fixture a year ago, it was another fantastic occasion against a side who's supporters travelled in large numbers. Pre-season continues on Saturday when The Miners make the short visit to Tadcaster Albion (kick-off 3pm).
