Garforth last night faced another opponent who we've had many battles with over the years, but despite the short distance it was a first visit in ten years to this venue. Last time, a second-half brace from Sam Jones secured victory for Graham Nicholas' side after going in 1-1 at the break, and this one was to go a similar way.
In a tight first half of few chances, Owen Marshall's low shot was saved when he found himself on the end of Jay Davis' free-kick. Shortly after Glasshoughton's number 10 shot wide at the near post after winning the ball on the byeline. Flatters then claimed a long-range effort from Welfare no. 7. A couple of good Town chances saw captain Dan Coupland denied by the Blues stopper after Nash Connolly made his way in from the right, then Marshall sadly couldn't capitalise when his opposing keeper spilled Steve Jeff's corner-kick. Luke Aldrich then shot narrowly wide when Rinor Ejupi played him through. This spell of pressure culminated in a Miners penalty on 29 mins when Coupland was taken down in the area when played in by Jeff's free-kick. Max Tweddle stepped up, but the keeper guessed the right way and brilliantly pushed it wide.
Garforth were the better side second half, with our defence pretty much snuffing out the home threat. Aldrich could only hit wide when receiving the ball in space deep inside the box on 50 mins, before he came close again on 61 mins when his header from Jeff's delivery brought a save from the Welfare keeper, but was in any case penalised for an apparent push. The Miners finally gained the lead two mins later when Matt Savage's free-kick picked out Jordan Emery at the far post who volleyed home. Sub and triallist George Harrison almost grabbed a second when set up by Tweddle, but the keeper managed to deny him at the second attempt. The roles were reversed moments later when Harrison burst forward down the left and found Tweddle who could only blaze over the bar.
Young striker Daniel Ramsden made a return to the first team on 72 mins, and had himself an assist 8 mins later to surely settle the contest. Making a foray down the right, he found Ejupi inside the box who controlled and fired low into the net through the keeper's legs. Two minutes from time, Ejupi grabbed his second to make it three. Receiving the ball from Tweddle, he sidestepped a defender and struck low into the bottom corner. He almost grabbed a first ever club hattrick on 89 mins when getting on the end of Tweddle's corner, but his header went just beyond the far post.
Another good work out for Paul Marshall's side who play one last friendly match next Monday when we visit Tadcaster Magnets (kick-off 7pm).
