With the two sides two divisions apart nowadays amid much change at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds, it was a tie Garforth were expected to win and as such they were the dominant side throughout. Despite an early opener, for much of the evening chances went begging however and it took until the 77th minute to finally break The Vikings' resistance.

Connolly was on target to put The Miners ahead on 9 mins, diverting Dan Coupland's low shot beyond Goole keeper Ted Carpenter. Connolly almost turned provider on 18 mins, delivering into the six-yard box but Matthew Savage couldn't turn it home. Another delivery from the midfielder moments later was cut out at the near post by Jack Dolman. Savage was unlucky not to make it two on 28 mins when his curling effort struck the far post. Charlie Marshall, again playing as centre-forward, then came close from Max Tweddle's lofted ball, lifting the ball over Carpenter but seeing his effort cleared. A 20-yard effort from Owen Marshall was just over the crossbar when played in by Savage, then Charlie Marshall shot straight at Carpenter when picked out by Coupland. The chances continued to come as half time approached; a Rinor Ejupi effort was also straight at Carpenter, before the woodwork was struck a second time when Charlie Marshall's low shot from Connolly's cross came off the far post. It should be said Carpenter, a 16-year old understood to be making his debut, had an excellent game and he pulled off the first of a string of good saves in first-half injury time, denying Tweddle's curling strike from a free-kick just outside the area.

Ejupi should've made it two when racing clear on 52 mins, but Carpenter was there to deny him with another good stop. The rebound fell to Charlie Marshall but his shot was blocked by a defender. Another chance for Ejupi came on 58 mins from a free kick which Carpenter turned onto the post, the rebound sadly not taken advantage of. Jamie Barkway's header at the far post from Tweddle's corner kick was straight at Carpenter, then the keeper was there to deny Ejupi again moments later when the midfielder broke clear.

Captain Coupland has saved his goals for crucial moments so far this season and he scored another on 77 mins to finally settle the tie. Receiving the ball from sub George Harrison, he finished smartly across Carpenter for his fourth of the campaign. There was almost a rare goal for sub Steve Jeff shortly after, his shot pushed wide.

Town finally found their scoring boots to add two more goals in the last seven minutes and set up a second round tie at home to Ossett United. Joe Allerton scored his second for the club on 83 mins, controlling sub Mutty Al-Jahadhmy's cross and firing low into the net. Sub Daniel Ramsden saw an effort well saved by Carpenter, but it was 4-0 on 88 mins when Jordan Emery headed home Jeff's corner kick for the utility man's second of the season.

A first win in four for The Miners to hopefully restore confidence going into a tough trip to 3rd-place Bradford (Park Avenue) this Saturday, kick-off 3pm.
