Storm Darragh was in full force at the Bannister Prentice Stadium but failed to prevent the Miners from putting in an impressive display against bottom-placed Sheffield FC. Goals from Max Bauer, Matt Antcliff, Jordan Emery and Sam Cable seal a comfortable win at home for Town.
From the first minute, it was evident that the ball would hold up horrendously on the soaked pitch. Despite that, both teams began with energy and aimed to drive forward with the ball at any opportunity. In the 4th minute, Matt Savage managed to (whilst slipping to the deck) knock a great ball through to Bauer in space, who leathered an effort into the far corner of the net for the early opener.
The quest for the equaliser for the visitors almost was completed shortly after, as a hopeful yet powerful strike by Jack Watson from distance headed goalwards but narrowly sailed over the bar. The harsh conditions forced errors from both sides; one slip from Sheffield's Sam Greenhouse allowed Dexter Marshall to latch onto the ball on the edge of the area.
Marshall's shot forced keeper Edward Hall into a good parry wide, although the ball was swiftly picked up by Matt Antcliff who turned back into the box and fired a strike that slipped through many Sheffield bodies to make it 2-0 to the Miners in only 20 minutes. Sheffield FC's night went from bad to worse as a collision in the visitors' half resulted in Greenhouse having to be stretchered off the field after a lengthy spell down.
Town continued to be relentless in their attacking as a brilliant piece of interplay from Sam Barker and Bauer eventually led to a powerful attempt from Dan Coupland, forcing Edward into another great save around the post for a Garforth corner. The howling wind and rain seemed to favour the Miners, as the whirling delivery in from Coupland met the head of Jordan Emery who thumped his header into the roof of the net for Town's third goal of the half in the 37th minute.
A consolation for Sheffield nearly occurred before the end of the first period as a lofted ball to Watson allowed him time to volley an effort low to Miners shot stopper Harry Flatters' right. A great first save from the keeper almost counted for nought, but unbelievable speed across the area allowed him to fly out to Joshua Ayres and flick his strike onto the bar to complete a wonderful double save.
After the interval, the game resumed its end-to-end nature despite the scoreline. Both sides continued to pump balls forward in the hope of forcing more defensive mistakes. A poor clearance by Sheffield keeper Hall fell straight to the feet of Barker from 30 yards out, although the by-now waterlogged pitch certainly played a part in preventing him from firing into the open goal,
Both number ones stayed heavily involved in proceedings: Flatters managed to get fingertips to a fine Ayres header to maintain his clean sheet whilst Hall spread well to prevent Barker from a one-on-one chance only seconds later. Sheffield definitely put in a spirited shift in attempt to claw one back for their large group of travelling fans, however the Miners held their shape and added to their advantage in the 80th minute.
Another well worked move led to substitute Sam Cable, who dribbled into the box from the left side and rifled a bullet of a shot between Hall and the near post to bury Town's fourth of the evening. Cable came very close to doubling his tally late in the game after a great solo run allowed him space to whip an effort far post - which thumped the post and out of play to close out an incredible night on the pitch for Garforth.
