An impressive season overall for the Miners came to a somewhat disappointing end, as an early Pontefract penalty kick separated the sides in an otherwise even derby day encounter. Garforth battled valiantly in the hope to recover from the setback, although no more goals came for either side.
Straight from the off, a brilliant run in behind from Sam Cable fooled the high line of the Colls and left him one-on-one with keeper Lloyd Allinson. However, he could only shoot from a tight angle and Allinson did enough to keep it out.
Only minutes later, a whipped ball into the box from the visitors met the foot of Michael Dunn; his effort was skied over the bar from close range, but Harry Flatters collided with him on the follow through. Referee Abdul Hakimy signalled for a spot kick to Pontefract, allowing Jack Boyle to slot away the opener and his fifth goal against Town this season.
The next 20 minutes held little to no chances for either side, yet the Miners showed signs of an equaliser with some dangerous pieces of play in the Colls half. Frustratingly for the bumper crowd however, neither team looked like altering the scoreline for much of the first period.
In the 33rd minute, Town's Nash Connelly managed to pick out Steven Jeff at the back post with a beauty of a cross. Jeff's strike was equally as impressive as it flew towards the top left corner, but Allinson was quick to pull off a great save to tip the chance wide.
Shortly after, a quick one-two between Charlie Marshall and Connelly allowed the latter to yet again find Jeff at the far post, although a last-gasp challenge from Colls defender Gavin Rothery helped maintain their lead.
Pontefract quickly responded to the sudden surge of home chances with an opportunity for themselves. A counterattack against the run of play eventually found the feet of Boyle, who from 20 yards out curled a shot towards the bottom right corner which failed to test Flatters beyond a simple save.
As the first half came to a close, it seemed a Miners equaliser was well within reach, but the overall performance levels would still have to be taken up a gear. After the interval, disaster almost struck instantly when Flatters was tackled from a back pass by Dunn, but thankfully the ball was lost close to the byline and Dunn couldn't capitalise on the open goal.
Town's reaction was swift however, as on the breakaway Marshall lifted a gorgeous ball through to Cable, finding himself again with only the keeper to beat from an unfavourable angle. This time, he tried for placement but rolled his chance past the wrong side of the post.
The following 20 minutes provided some frantic, end-to-end entertainment, although wasteful finishing from both sides kept proceedings at 1-0 to the visitors for the time being. The additions of Max Bauer, Ewan Gregson and Alex Zachariou provided Town with more of an attacking threat, nevertheless time left to avoid defeat was dwindling.
With 15 to go, a neat bit of skill from Colls substitute Ify Ofoegbu offered him space to shoot from a central position in the box, yet his thunderbolt of a strike came inches away from putting the game to bed as it narrowly flew over the crossbar.
Garforth continued to fight for the leveller for the remainder of the half but lacked the final bit of quality to rescue a point. Charlie Fryer and Shane Sylvester from the Under 23's squad were brought into the fold in injury time, with the pair receiving rapturous support from the home crowd.
The final whistle brought an end to an unfortunate afternoon for the Miners, although defeat also for Bradford Park Avenue meant that Town finish the season in a more than respectable 9th placed position in the NPL East Division.
