Rinor Ejupi made his first start of the season, replacing Nash Connolly in a midfield role who was given a seat on the bench. Luke Aldrich also returned after missing last weekend's draw with Hallam, at the expense of Joe Rawcliffe who likewise was named a substitute. Also back was defender Harry Viggars from suspension who joined Connolly and Rawcliffe on the bench.
It was an evening where both sides huffed and puffed and clear-cut chances were hard to come by. A Josh Venney free-kick from 25 yards on 8 mins brought a routine save from Harry Flatters, then shortly afterwards Garforth captain Dan Coupland went closer when teed up by Jay Davis. His shot was kept out by Grimsby keeper Liam Higton with Davis receiving the loose ball and then seeing a strike cut out at the near post by a defender. The best chance of the half came to Ejupi when put clear by Joe Allerton, but Higton did well to deny him with his knee. The only other opening of note before the break came on 21 mins when a dangerous move in from the right saw a one-two between Alex Flett and Rio Molyneaux end with the latter firing over the bar from a narrow angle.
Into the second half and a Davis volley was over the bar after Max Tweddle's free-kick was half-cleared, before Coupland's effort was turned wide when played in by Ejupi. As the half went on it became clear the Wilderness Boys would be happy to take a point from their 144-mile return trip from North-East Lincolnshire and it was down to The Miners to break them down. Davis' turn and shot from a ball over the top 25 yards out went just wide on 58 mins, then Coupland found himself in space from Davis' delivery on 76 mins but headed over the bar. Five minutes later substitute Charlie Marshall was set up by Coupland on the edge of the box, but couldn't test Higton. The introductions of Connolly and Harrison in the final ten minutes couldn't help break the deadlock either and in terms of chances created, that was pretty much that.
Two draws in the first two games does of course mean Paul Marshall's side are unbeaten in the league so far, but despite some good individual performances and perhaps some strength in depth, our cutting edge as an attacking force isn't there just yet. With no game this weekend, we head to Derbyshire on Tuesday night for a first ever meeting with Matlock Town (kick-off 7:45pm).
