Goals from Owen Marshall, Aldrich and an Ejupi brace saw The Miners to a first away win of the season

Whilst calling this a hammering would be a tad unfair on the hosts who did make things difficult at times, goals in crucial points of the game proved the difference in our first ever win at this venue.

Before the game there was a minute's applause for the father of Town assistant manager (and former United player) Mark Smitheringale who sadly passed away on Friday.

The first clear-cut chance of the afternoon fell to Rinor Ejupi on ten minutes who struck just over the bar after the ball was laid off on the edge of the box by Owen Marshall. Shortly after Harry Flatters saved a Grayson Giles effort after Owen Vincent was initially denied in the box by a Garforth defender. On 17 mins Town had the lead when a cross from the right found Mutty El-Jahadhmy. His shot was blocked, but the rebound fell to Marshall who controlled and delivered a stunning strike into the bottom corner. After a couple of goals in friendlies, this was his first in competitive football for the club to make himself our eleventh different scorer this season after only nine games played.

On 20 mins Lincoln captain Elliott Dye volleyed over the bar after Tristan Drummond's corner kick was played back to him, then down the other end Ejupi came close to doubling our advantage when his shot was saved at the near post by Whites keeper Heath Richardson. It was indeed 2-0 seconds before the break though. Jordan Emery's long throw was palmed away from goal by Richardson, but only to an awaiting Luke Aldrich who nodded in at the back post for his first league goal of the season.

Drummond's corner kick a minute into the second period was punched out by Flatters, but only as far as Sam Swinn who's strike went just beyond the far post. Harry Colville went close after a flowing move with Ejupi, a curling shot which Richardson turned round the far post. There was a good chance for Giles on 54 mins when he forced his way into the box, but could only shoot straight at Flatters. Aldrich came close to a second on the hour mark from Charlie Marshall's delivery across the six-yard box, but hit just wide.

On 68 mins the hosts were back in the game when Drummond made his way in from the left and his low shot evaded the dive of Flatters into the far corner of the net. There followed a nervous fifteen or so minutes for the travelling faithful and to this end, Harry Viggars replaced Aldrich to strengthen Town's defence. The momentum had shifted to The Whites but, despite their possession, they were reduced to a couple of half-chances and some swift counter-attacking football late on reaped The Miners their rewards. Four minutes from time, sub Nash Connolly was played through by Matthew Savage to deliver across the six-yard box for Ejupi to slot home. Soon after, a brilliant through ball by Savage picked out Ejupi who poked past the stranded Richardson for his second of the afternoon. He probably should have had a hattrick in injury time when racing clear onto sub Jay Davis' ball over the top, but could only hit wide.

Connor Brown saw an effort blocked in the box at the expense of a corner kick as United tried to reduce the arrears deep into injury time. In the end the points went back up the A1 as Town celebrated an excellent victory which lifted us to sixth in the table and, for at least a couple of supporters present, banish the memories of the 7-1 defeat suffered here on our last visit 32 years ago.

After the re-arranging of next Saturday's home game against Newton Aycliffe, we have a two-week break until our next outing on 27th September when we hit the road again, this time to North Ferriby (kick-off 3pm).
