Before the game there was a presentation for goalkeeper Harry Flatters who made his 100th appearance for the club.
Whilst Redcar were a good side adapting impressively to life in the NPL, they didn’t really have to get out of first gear against a disjointed Garforth who failed to adapt to the gusty conditions and never really looked like getting anything from the game.
The Steelmen were ahead within seven minutes when full back Curtis Round picked up the ball on the edge of the box and found the net with a cracking strike into the top corner. Striker Adam Boyes almost made it two on 16 mins when played in by Round, but his low shot was deflected wide. There were appeals for a Redcar penalty shortly after when Oscar Fletcher went down in the box, but the referee waved play on and instead booked Fletcher and an away coach for their protests. Nevertheless, the lead was doubled on 22 mins when the ball was worked in from the right, and with Town players appealing in vain for offside, Bradley Fewster found himself clear to finish low into the net. Things got even worse for The Miners five minutes later; Round’s corner kick picking out captain Danny Lay who’s header Flatters got a glove to but couldn’t keep out.
As the scoreline might suggest, Garforth's defence had struggled to handle the visitors and when getting forward ourselves, attacks were easily snuffed out. One of our few chances on target of the afternoon came on 29 mins when Charlie Marshall made a decent run forward and forced a save from Athletic keeper Joshua Mazfari. As half time approached Owen Marshall looked to have been taken down in the area but like Fletcher down the other end before him, nothing was given. Further misfortune befell us in injury time when Joe Allerton’s shot was fumbled on the line by Mazfari, but despite claims it had gone over, the referee again waved away our appeals.
A double substitution was made by acting manager Mark Smitheringale at half time, Rinor Ejupi (who took a knock on Tuesday) and Luke Aldrich replacing Matthew Savage and Joe Allerton. The Miners did a bit better as a result but the end product was lacking. Owen Marshall’s 20-yard effort was just wide, before Jamie Barkway’s far post header from captain Dan Coupland’s free-kick was narrowly over. On the hour-mark Ejupi managed to get clear with the onrushing Mazfari to beat, but he too couldn’t find the net.
After soaking up the pressure the visitors looked to counter-attack in search of more goals. From a 65th-minute free-kick, Fletcher took the ball round Flatters and found the net, but was judged offside. On 78 mins it was 4-0 when Flatters parried Boyes’s strike to Round who slammed home for his second of the game.
Aldrich fired over the bar after sub Gracjan Klimczak’s effort was blocked, as Town's struggles to test Mazfari continued. Fewster should’ve grabbed his second on 85 mins after making his space just inside the box, but fired over the bar. Back down the other end, a skillful foray in from the left by sub George Harrison sadly wasn’t finished off when his shot could only bring a routine save.
Into injury time and Garforth’s misery was complete when Fewster did grab his second to make it five. With Town players again awaiting an offside flag that never came, he found himself in acres of space to finish low into the net.
An afternoon with few positives to take and we now find ourselves without a win in three. Luckily we only have three days to dwell on this one with Tuesday's visit to Bridlington Town up next (kick-off 7:45pm).
