With three wins from the last four visits, The Bradley Development Centre has been a happy hunting ground for Garforth against yesterday's opponents and supporters eschewing "Mad Saturday" to make the journey were in for a real treat as the hosts were taken apart by an outstanding team performance.
The Miners showed their intent from the off, with Luke Aldrich's header on 8 mins kept out by Wilderness Boys keeper Seb Auton after a throw-in was flicked on. Aldrich was in on the chances again moments later when his turn and shot brought a good save from Auton. Two minutes later Town were awarded a penalty when a cross was adjudged to have hit the elbow of a Borough defender. Captain Dan Coupland, back in the starting lineup after a rare substitute appearance at Newton Aycliffe last week, confidently despatched to give us the lead. "Coup's" seventh goal of the season, bringing him up to joint second in the scoring charts with Rinor Ejupi.
Joe Allerton came close on 18 mins with a 25-yard effort which was held by Auton after a flowing move in from the left. Down the other end substitute Bola Okewoye (who'd replaced an injured Bradley Wood) fashioned the home side's first opening after winning the ball back just outside the box, but lashed his shot wide. The chances continued for Paul Marshall's side from then on, Charlie Marshall's curling shot on 29 mins nervously cleared off the goalline by Arun Jones. Ten minutes later we made it 2-0 courtesy of Max Tweddle and a slice of good fortune. Auton initially looked to have done well to hold on to the fullback's strike after a 20-yard free-kick was blocked by the wall, but dropped the ball onto the post and into the net, allowing Tweddle to celebrate his third goal of the season.
Ejupi almost forced another error after racing onto a through ball, a defender almost turning his cross into his own net. Instead Town profited from the fullback's resulting corner kick; Barkway's downward header at the far post directed home by Aldrich for his ninth of the season. Coupland almost grabbed his second in first half injury time after Tweddle worked in from the left, his low shot saved.
Charlie Marshall's fruitless search for a first goal of the season was finally ended three weeks ago at Silsden, and with the monkey off his back, the midfielder has played a big part in our recent good form. On 54 mins he scored a third in as many games after Allerton rode challenges down the left - his low shot brought a good save from Auton, but the loose ball fell to Marshall who headed home for Town's fourth.
A spell of chances followed for The Wilderness Boys as they looked for a consolation. Okewoye's deflected effort was over the bar when set up by Josh Venney, and from the resulting corner Harry Flatters denied captain Alex Flett's low strike. Okewoye looked sure to score a consolation when the pacey fullback beat Ollie Patrick down the right, but the midfielder recovered well with a superb challenge.
A number of substitutions for both sides followed with two of Garforth's looking to get on the scoresheet. Steven Jeff's curling free-kick went just beyond the far post on 73 mins, then Dexter Ball hit just wide after Charlie Marshall's foray in from the left. Ball came close again from Nash Connolly's delivery; his header at the far post deflected off-target. Marshall headed goals have been a rare occurance in his 200 appearances for the club, and this one dear reader, now featured two ten minutes from time when he turned home Connolly's corner kick to complete the scoring.
Garforth's biggest victory since our return to NPL football to make it three wins on the road and six from seven in all competitions. If we can continue this sort of form both home and away, then the second half of the season could well be an exciting one. Town are next in action on Boxing Day when we host second place neighbours Emley (kick-off 1pm).
