Well it was a good day out apart from the football...
In a match short on chances and moments of real quality, Garforth struggled for much of it to penetrate the defence of a second-from-bottom home side who'd lost their last four. The first chance of the afternoon came to Two Blues striker Dean Thexton who's low shot from Joshua Scott's assist was saved by Harry Flatters. A minute later Jack Blackford's curling free kick looked to have evaded everyone in a packed penalty box and was headed into the net, but was diverted wide by a Town defender.
Mutty Al-Jahahdmy did well to provide our first chance on 12 mins; running to the byeline and picking out Rinor Ejupi who volleyed just over the bar, but in any case the latter was penalised for a foul. A promising move down the right saw Ejupi play in Charlie Marshall but his shot was beyond the far post.
The only goal of the game arrived on 23 mins. From a throw in on the left, the ball was worked to Wayne Whitfield who surging run was finished off with a powerful strike to beat a wrong-footed Flatters. There was one more chance of note before half time; Marshall's tame effort straight at Bishop keeper Jack Norton when set up by Luke Aldrich.
Lewis Lambert's drive was straight at Flatters on 52 mins as the home side fleetingly sought a second goal. Garforth improved a little after the break but without really testing Norton. Mutty Fuad Al-Jahadhmy ("Mutty Junior") almost scored on his first start for the club on 66 mins when his shot from the edge of the box was held by the Two Blues stopper. A trio of free kicks in good positions looked promising but sadly came to nothing - Dexter Ball headed just wide from Harry Colville's delivery, a Marshall effort brought a routine save and then another from Colville went just over the bar. There was another setback for our injury-hit side when sub George Harrison had to be stretchered off with a suspected hamstring injury only nine minutes after coming on. Hopefully a speedy recovery for the midfielder whose impact from the bench earlier in the season has been missed in recent weeks. Ten minutes of injury time ensued, but our afternoon was summed up when sub Daniel Ramsden picked out Steve Jeff at the far post who could only blaze over the bar.
A disappointing result for Paul Marshall's side but a massive win for Bishops who are now three points from safety with four games remaining as the race to stay in the NPL East takes another twist. No time to dwell on this one as we go into tomorrow's Easter Monday derby against Pontefract Collieries, seeking a first win in seven against our neighbours (kick-off 3pm).
